Ethiopia Night is an annual event highlighting Ethiopian Jewish culture, and the community as a whole. The idea was inspired by leaders from campuses across the country and supported by Greater Portland Hillel. As president of CHAI (The Cultural & Historical Association for Israel) at Portland State University, I took it upon myself to make this event a reality. Leading not only the visual branding of the event, but logistics, location, food, speakers, A/V, performances, and garnering micro-grants from multiple organizations.

The event brought over 200 people. The crowd was full of intersecting communities, including many Jews, Muslims and Christians who would rarely have reason to celebrate together. Attendees enjoyed traditional Ethiopian food cooked by a local family, an Ethiopian coffee ceremony and Afro-funk music performed live by Izzy Baba-Melo alongside a crew of dancers. Additionally, PSU alumni Tali Aynalem spoke about her experience as an Israeli Ethiopian Jewish woman.

Building community through commonality and firsthand experiences.

When it came to branding the event, I chose colors directly inspired by the Ethiopian national flag. I wanted something bold, recognizable to Ethiopians, and something that felt fun and accessible to all students. I reserved space for a large banner in the student union, decorated a window display, created fliers, and designed unique  facebook and Instagram ads.

Ethiopia Night has become our most popular event and has continued annually since 2018, and will continue after my graduation.
